The importance of public sector data
Public sector data can help better inform government services, policies and programs and research for the benefit of all Australians.

Agencies are required to have strong safeguards in place to protect data – such as privacy legislation, secure buildings and IT systems, and strict requirements on employees who have access to data.
Data Availability and Transparency Legislation
The Data Availability and Transparency Act 2022 establishes a new, best practice scheme for sharing Australian Government data, underpinned by strong safeguards and simplified, efficient processes.
Our role
The National Data Commissioner, supported by the Office, is responsible for overseeing the DATA Scheme and fostering best practice data handling and sharing.
