Our purpose

The Office of the National Data Commissioner (ONDC) is responsible for streamlining how public sector data is used and shared to:

  • promote greater use of public sector data
  • drive innovation and economic, social, and environmental benefits from greater use of public sector data
  • build trust with the Australian community around government’s use of data

The ONDC has been developing the Data Availability and Transparency Bill (DAT Bill) introduced to the Parliament on 9 December 2020.

Once enacted, the DAT Bill will create the Data Availability and Transparency Act (DATA) scheme to help approved people and organisations to request controlled access to federal government data.

The ONDC sits within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
