MEDIA RELEASE: Rod Sims to Chair National Data Advisory Council
National Data Commissioner, Gayle Milnes, has announced new appointments to the National Data Advisory Council – Rod Sims AO as Chair, as well as Dr Kalinda Griffiths, Professor Greg Kaplan and Dr Kendra Vant as members.
“The council’s advice to the National Data Commissioner is integral to ensuring the proper functioning of the DATA Scheme - a new scheme for sharing Australian Government data which is underpinned by strong safeguards and consistent, efficient processes,” Ms Milnes said.
The scheme is focused on increasing the availability and use of Australian Government data, in a safe way, to deliver better outcomes for all Australians. Data is only shared under the scheme to inform better government services, policies and programs as well as research and innovation.
Ms Milnes said she is delighted to have Mr Sims join the council as Chair.
“Rod’s leadership in regulation and commitment to protecting Australians during his more than 10 years as Chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, combined with his deep public policy expertise, makes him a great fit for the role”.
The new council members join Paul McCarney, Dr Joshua Meltzer and Professor Sallie Pearson as well as ex-officio members Dr Cathy Foley, Australia’s Chief Scientist, Angelene Falk, the Australian Information Commissioner and Privacy Commissioner, and Dr David Gruen, the Australian Statistician.
“Across the council, our members bring diverse skills and expertise on data and digital, including indigenous data, regulation and public policy issues,” said Ms Milnes.
