Project description and public interest
statement

The National Disability Data Asset (NDDA) will bring together de-identified data from Australian, state and territory government agencies for research and analysis. It will provide deeper, data driven insights about the needs and outcomes of people with disability than available previously. This information will help improve programs and services for people with disability.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) are partnering to design, develop, and deliver the technical aspects of the asset. The NDDA project is being led by the Australian Government Department of Social Services and is overseen by the Disability Reform Ministerial Council.

Public Interest Statement

Sharing the specified data will enable the delivery of the NDDA, which is in the public interest.

The NDDA will help people with disability, family members and carers; organisations that service people with disability; researchers; and governments:

  • access better information;
  • use, design, and deliver better support, services and information; and
  • collaborate to improve outcomes for people with disability.

Description of shared data

Specified data 1: SA Hospitals

These data are person-centred versions of the source data supplied by the Government of South Australia Department for Health and Wellbeing. AIHW has developed the datasets in collaboration with states and territories as part of the National Health Data Hub (NHDH), and will include an NDDA Synthetic Row ID.

The data includes variables from the following two hospital datasets:

  • admitted patient care services data (in public and private hospitals)
  • non-admitted emergency department services data (in public hospitals)

Temporal coverage for each dataset is 2010-11 onwards (where available).

Data provider: Government of South Australia Department for Health and Wellbeing

Specified data 2: Subset of National Linkage Map (Hospitals)

The National Linkage Map (NLMap) describes how the National Linkage Spine (NLS) and all the datasets and assets linked to it are connected. The results from linking data to the NLS will produce the NLMap. The NLMap is a concordance of de-identified person IDs that provides pointers to records of an individual across different datasets.

Output

Final output 1: SA Hospitals Modules

The SA Hospitals Modules consist of two modules:

  1. SA National Hospital Morbidity Database (SA_NHMD)
  2. SA National Non-Admitted Patient Emergency Department Care Database (SA_NNAPEDCD)

Additional Information

Variation registered on 30 September 2024.

The variation removes non-admitted patient data drawn from the National Non-Admitted Patient (episode-level) Database. The variation also adds two emergency department variables: second additional diagnoses and patient location.
